Automatic Refunds for Adoption Credit Carryforwards
The Internal Revenue Service has begun issuing refunds to more than 50,000 taxpayers who claimed the adoption tax credit carryforward. Under the Treasury Department's clarified interpretation of the Working Families Tax Cuts, carryforwards from tax years 2020 through 2024 can increase the refundable portion of the credit claimed for 2025.
This adjustment is subject to the $5,000 limitation per qualifying child. The change applies only to tax year 2025. Taxpayers who filed their 2025 returns before April 15, 2026 will generally receive the adjustment automatically. Returns filed under extension or accounts with identity theft indicators, freezes, dependency conflicts or other issues will be reviewed later in 2026.
Republic Tax Relief describes private tax-resolution services for individuals and businesses with IRS or state tax issues. Families with separate existing tax debt questions unrelated to this adoption credit adjustment may wish to ask the firm about the suitability, scope, fees and availability of its private tax-resolution services during a free, no-obligation initial consultation.
Implementation and Taxpayer Notices
The IRS is adjusting affected accounts and issuing refunds without requiring taxpayers to file amended returns. Adjustments and refunds started in late September 2026 and are expected to be complete for most eligible taxpayers by the end of the year.
Taxpayers will receive a notice from the IRS, generally within 30 days of the adjustment. The notice will show the amount changed and whether it resulted in a refund or was applied to another tax or non-tax debt. Affected taxpayers should review the notice, compare it with their 2025 return, and keep it with their records.
Next Steps for Taxpayers
Most affected taxpayers do not need to take any action. The IRS encourages creation of an IRS Individual Online Account to view tax records, check refund status, review notices and make payments.
Further details on the adoption tax credit are available on IRS.gov. Taxpayers should verify their specific situation directly with the IRS, especially if their account has unresolved issues that may delay processing.
