WHAT TO KNOW
  • Current PTINs expire December 31, 2026, and must be renewed annually for 2027 use.
  • Online renewal through the IRS PTIN system takes about 15 minutes and costs a nonrefundable $18.75.
  • The PTIN system also allows checking continuing education, viewing return filings, and tracking Annual Filing Season Program progress.

Renewal Requirement and Deadline

The Internal Revenue Service issued a reminder on November 4, 2026, that paid tax return preparers must renew their preparer tax identification numbers for 2027. Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns or refund claims for compensation is required to hold a valid PTIN.

Current PTINs expire on December 31, 2026. The renewal process helps the IRS identify legitimate paid preparers and underscores the responsibilities involved in tax return preparation.

Republic Tax Relief notes that tax professionals facing separate IRS compliance or tax-debt questions unrelated to PTIN renewal may wish to contact the firm for a free, no-obligation initial consultation about its private tax-resolution services to evaluate suitability, scope, fees and availability of help communicating with the IRS.

How to Renew Online

The fastest renewal method is through the IRS PTIN System on IRS.gov. The online process generally takes about 15 minutes and involves signing into the account, reviewing and updating information, submitting the application, and paying the nonrefundable $18.75 fee.

Upon completion, users receive immediate confirmation of their PTIN renewal. The fee cannot be transferred or refunded.

Mail Renewal Option

Tax professionals preferring to renew by mail may submit Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application and Renewal. Processing for paper applications typically takes about six weeks.

Additional PTIN Account Features

The online PTIN system provides more than renewal capabilities. Users can check completed continuing education credits, view the number of Form 1040 returns filed using their PTIN, review communications from the IRS Tax Professional Management Office, and track progress in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program.

Keeping contact information current in the account ensures receipt of important PTIN-related communications from the IRS.

Annual Filing Season Program and Enrolled Agents

Non-credentialed preparers may consider the voluntary Annual Filing Season Program. Those meeting continuing education and other requirements receive a Record of Completion, appear in the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications, and may gain limited representation rights.

PTIN renewal is separate from enrolled agent renewal. Enrolled agents whose Social Security numbers end in 7, 8, or 9, or who lack an SSN, are in the current renewal cycle through January 31, 2027, and should also renew their PTINs for 2027.
